Paris Saint-Germain’s South Korean midfielder Lee Kang-in (22) has seen his compulsory military service reduced from 18 months to just three weeks, as reported by Le Parisien.
In South Korea, military service is compulsory for men aged between 18 and 28 years old. Few exceptions are granted, however, winning the Asian Games is one of them. And that is what Kang-in did. Following PSG’s UEFA Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund in September, the former Mallorca midfielder was allowed to play in the Asian Games, despite the competition falling outside of the FIFA calendar.
South Korea beat Japan 2-1 in the final and in doing so won the competition for the third time in a row. As a result, all of the players in the squad have now seen their military service reduced from 18 months to just three weeks. Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-Min benefitted from the same exemption when he won the same competition with South Korea back in 2018.
