Kylian Mbappé not expected to make decision on PSG contract extension until Champions League campaign is over

L’Équipe are reporting that Kylian Mbappé (24) is not expected to make a decision as to whether to extend his Paris Saint-Germain contract until after the completion of the club’s UEFA Champions League campaign.

Mbappé’s future at PSG was the topic of great scrutiny over the summer. Just one year after signing a new deal with Les Parisiens, a letter written to the club, informing the executives that he wouldn’t trigger the one-year extension in his two-year deal sent the club into meltdown. Fearing losing Mbappé on a free transfer next summer, they gave him two options: extend or leave for a fee this summer. Neither option suited Mbappé, who wanted to see out the final year of his deal but was reticent to extend. This stance saw him excluded from the club’s pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea.

The France captain was even absent from PSG’s Ligue 1 opener against FC Lorient, however, a rapprochement soon saw him re-integrated into the setup, despite Mbappé’s stance on an extension reportedly remaining unchanged. According to L’Équipe, a “financial agreement was reached”, and this could include an agreement to forego some of the hefty bonuses linked to remaining at the club this summer.

Whilst the relationship between Mbappé and PSG’s hierarchy has improved in recent weeks, and all parties are a lot more patient, no one at the club is expecting Mbappé to make a decision on his PSG future before the end of their Champions League campaign. PSG are much calmer about the situation, however, unlike last summer, where the fear of losing the world’s most valuable player for free plunged the club into crisis before the season had even started. Whilst Mbappé’s PSG contract expires at the end of the current season, but any clarity surrounding his future seems a way off.
