Interior minister Gérald Darmanin announces increased security for France-Scotland clash

Security measures for France’s match against Scotland on Tuesday night will be strengthened, as announced by Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin. The announcement comes in the wake of Monday’s suspected terrorist attack, where two Swedes were killed before Sweden’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Belgium in Brussels.

Speaking on RTL on Tuesday morning, Darmanin has said that extra security measures have been put in place for Tuesday night’s match against Scotland at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille. “We have multiplied our resources and again this morning we are going to double the units at the border. The RAID (anti-terrorist unit of the French Police) has been mobilised and there will be six mobile units instead of three in Lille,” said Darmanin.

The security level in Brussels has been raised to its highest level following Monday’s attack in Brussels, which left two Swedish nationals dead. The Belgian authorities are treating it as a terrorist act. Abdesalem Lassoued, the man responsible for the shootings, was shot dead by Belgian police.

Belgium’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Sweden was taking place just three miles away at the Roi-Baudoiun stadium. The game was abandoned at half-time with fans kept in the ground for two hours for their safety.
