Former Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye has backed the former to beat the latter during an interview with Le Parisien.
Cabaye has now retired, but he spent stints at both PSG and Newcastle. He featured 93 times for the Tyneside club, scoring 10 goals during his time at St James’ Park. He also featured 57 times for Les Parisiensm scoring 18 goals and registering 14 assists during his time with the club.
He will be in attendance for the return of UEFA Champions League football at St James’ Park, and he praised the club’s Saudi owners for leading Newcastle back into the prestigious competition. “The strategy is considered. There is a desire to breed an English culture, despite the club’s purchase […] they spent €150m during the transfer window, but they spent it well. They do things well and they’ve been rewarded for their work,” Cabaye told Le Parisien.
Despite the progress made by the Premier League club these past months, Cabaye still believes that should PSG play at their level, they will have too much for Newcastle. “If we are at our level, if we play our football and manage Newcastle’s key moments, I think there will be a good chance of winning the match,” he said.
PSG are currently top of their group following a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at the Parc des Princes a fortnight ago, whilst Newcastle marked their return to the competition with a 0-0 draw against AC Milan at the San Siro.
