Sud-Ouest report that Bordeaux president Gérard Lopez is in discussions with three American investment funds, all of which are interested in acquiring a minority stake in the Ligue 2 promotion challengers. A representative of one of the groups is said to have visited the club’s training ground.
Lopez, formerly president of F1 team Lotus and then of Ligue 1 side Lille, has been in charge of Bordeaux since June 2021. His arrival initially staved off administrative relegation, before the team went down to Ligue 2 anyway the next season after finishing bottom of the top flight. The club also narrowly avoided further relegation and bankruptcy this past summer, and are now challenging for a swift return to Ligue 1, sitting in second place.
Although Bordeaux were among the options considered by Chelsea owner Todd Boehly and his partners as they look to expand into the French market, Lopez does not want to turn the team into a satellite club. Strasbourg now appear to be the likeliest contender to be bought out by Boehly.
