Nemanja Matić informs Roma of his desire to join Rennes

Serbian international midfielder Nemanja Matić (35) is edging closer to a move to Ligue 1 side Rennes. Foot Mercato reports this Tuesday that the former Chelsea and Manchester United man has informed AS Roma of his intentions to leave the Italian capital with a view to join the Bretons. Ouest-France broke the news this Sunday that Stade Rennais have been looking to bring in Matić to compensate for the sale of midfield prospect Lesley Ugochukwu to Chelsea FC.

Foot Mercato understands that Matić is seriously considering the offer from Stade Rennais and that Rennes manager Bruno Genesio has promised him a key role within the squad. The 2023 Europa League runner-up with Roma is said to be willing to lower his €4m per year wages, while the José Mourinho-led outfit are potentially open to letting the 35-year-old leave as a free agent.

As for a replacement for Matić, Foot Mercato adds that out-of-favour PSG midfielder Leandro Paredes is currently being considered by the Giallorossi. Although his peak years are behind him, Matić’s signing would be a real coup for the Bretons. Rennes are gunning for a podium finish for the upcoming Ligue 1 campaign and will take part in the Europa League group stage.
