Arthur Theate to sign contract extension with Rennes

Having been the subject of interest from RB Leipzig – as well as Premier League clubs Liverpool  and Fulham beforehand – Belgian defender Arthur Theate will instead remain at Rennes for the upcoming season.

L’Équipe report this afternoon that the 23-year-old is set to sign a one-year contract extension, which will see him tied to the Breton club until the end of the 2026/27 campaign and his wages rise. According to reports, the Bundesliga side had been hoping to secure the services of the Belgian defender through a loan with a mandatory option to buy set at €30m.

The former Bologna man arrived in Ligue 1 last season and turned out 42 times for Rennes last season, helping the club clinch fourth place and a spot in the Europa League group stages. L’Équipe also indicate that Roma and Fiorentina had both tried to bring the Liège-born defender back to Serie A this summer.
