Fabio Grosso chooses to leave Rayan Cherki out of the Lyon squad for Marseille

Rayan Cherki (20) is absent from the Lyon squad available to face Marseille in Sunday night’s Olympico, the club have confirmed. The reasoning behind the French U21 international’s absence from the squad has not been confirmed or declared by the club.

Le Parisien’s Benjamin Quarez reports that the decision to leave Cherki out of the squad for Sunday’s highly anticipated clash with Marseille is not injury or fitness-related and is the choice of Lyon head coach Fabio Grosso. The former Frosinone boss has previously been critical of the 20-year-old in a press conference, saying “Rayan Cherki is not a special player”.

The French attacking midfielder has seen his position as a regular starter under threat since the arrival of Grosso and that has been made more apparent after his decision to leave Cherki out for one of Lyon’s most important games of the season. Duje Ćaleta-Car and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have also been named unavailable for the clash on Sunday.
