Paris Saint-Germain rarely threatened FC Lorient’s goal on Saturday night, as Luis Enrique’s side failed to get their title defence off to a winning start.
PSG dominated possession, having 97% possession within the first ten minutes. By the end of the match, the side had secured 78% possession, but they failed to do much with it. However, the 1001 passes completed by Les Parisiens was a record. Since Opta began analysing the division back in 2006, no side has completed more than 1000 passes over the course of a Ligue 1 match.
As a result of the 0-0 draw, PSG won’t finish the gameweek top of Ligue 1 for the first time since the second gameweek of the 2021/22 season. SCO Angers, now in Ligue 2, were top of the table at this time. Luis Enrique also set an unwanted record, becoming the first PSG manager since Paul Le Guen not to see his side score in his opening match. That record dated all the way back to a 0-0 draw back in 2007.
Lorient are a bit of a bogey team for PSG, at least when they face them on the opening day of the season. Les Parisiens have faced Les Merlus four times on matchday one, and have failed to win any of those matches (two draws, two defeats).
